 EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Wishing you the best of the holiday season. Thanks for visiting my website.

Welcome

This is a simple website.  There is a little introduction first, scroll down to the Gallery and the Gallery of Sold Paintings, and scroll further for my resume and finally at the bottom is contact information.  Thank you for visiting the site.

Artist Statement

I have always been drawn to natural elements, untouched places, scenes with history such as iconic or older buildings, agricultural settings, and flora and fauna.  I work from photographs or sketches completed on our travels and then paint in my studio space.

Acrylic is my usual choice of medium, however, I do some mix media, some oil or watercolor, and pen and ink drawings. I work mainly on canvas but will at times paint on watercolor paper or board.

Understand your own style is my philosophy.  I have attended a few unique educational opportunities but prefer to establish my own techniques and learn from my own successes and failures.  My goal is to produce artwork that appeals to those that like realistic scenes and draw some personal connection with the piece.

ROSSNAGEL ARTWORKS

Laurel grew up on a mixed farm along the edge of the Qu’Appelle Valley west of Regina, Saskatchewan. Her mother was artistic and encouraged her to sew, draw, paint, craft, and try photography. So, from an early age she gravitated to pencil drawings, pen and ink sketching, and painting.

She attributes my prairie roots and farm upbringing to establishing a strength of observation, as well as her success as a representational artist of landscape, buildings, flora, and fauna. Laurel has always had an interest in learning through personal trial and error. She participated twice in one week Emma Lake workshops to pursue her own art and interact with other artists including Wynona Croft Mulcaster. Also, she attended a workshop led by Adelaine Halverson and a Masters’ Class with Robert Bateman.

As a representational artist Laurel’s paintings are very realistic, and she challenges herself with different methods and a variety of subjects. The success of her paintings depends on attention to light and shade, shadows, and reflections.

Laurel has been showing and selling her art since 1990. Over that time, she has sold or donated over six hundred art pieces, completed many commissioned pieces and held over thirty solo exhibitions as well as participating in group shows and sales. She believes in supporting charity fundraisers and great causes.

She decided to retire in 2006 after 30 years at the University of Saskatchewan. Along with her husband she has travelled extensively and has sold artwork locally, nationally, and internationally.

They spent four and a half years of their retirement in Victoria, BC which provided new scenery to paint and opportunities to share her art. However, the Prairies and home were calling, and they happily returned in the Spring of 2023.

A few of Laurel's paintings can now been viewed at Dandelion Art Framing & Gallery, 2207 1st Ave N., Saskatoon.

Most of these paintings are acrylic, but I also work in mix media, oil, pen and ink and watercolor.  I paint landscapes, animals, birds, plants, and buildings.  The collection below includes paintings of Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Alberta, England and Australia.  Let me know if you have any questions by contacting me at RossnagelArtworks@gmail.com.
